For agencies using the picture book technique to help children in foster care develop a positive sense of identity, Arvin Publications offers an eleven by fourteen inch picture album inscribed My Life Book.
The album contains thirty-five sheets of heavy, scored stock and has a soft cover of leather-like pebbled vinyl. A gold embossed title adds the necessary personal character. The album was designed because social workers said the books available were either unreasonably expensive or of poor quality paper tied together with ribbon. In addition, they were inappropriately labeled "Scrap Book".
Although the price of My Life Book is reasonable, the quality and durability of the material have not been sacrificed. Pages are designed so they will lie flat for easy use. Children can use paste, pen, pencil, crayon, paint and eraser on them. The washable covers are soft, pliable and a pleasure to manipulate. Quantities of the books can be stored easily, ready for use as needed.
The introductory page is a presentation from worker to child. It sets the tenor for the appropriate relationship necessary for them to accomplish the task of confronting the realities of the child's life.
Prior to a child's placement some of the easily removed pages can be given to the new parents who can use them to compile pictures and comments to help prepare the child. These can then be incorporated into My Life Book providing a sense of continuity.
This is a free-form book. The introductory page is the only printed page.
